This book, wow...
Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy, I've read every single one of his books since and loved them, so it did change my life as I'm not really a big reader of fiction (I'd rather read a technical manual, biography or gudie) as I actually now occasionally read works of fiction....when Tom Clancy releases books at least :-)

I don't think I ever read Red Storm Rising, but I have a well worn VHS copy of The Hunt for Red October that I could watch every rainy sunday afternoon for years.
Despite the botched accents and the Alec Baldwin versus Harrison Ford versus Ben Affleck as the best Ryan (hint:, it's Alec Baldwin) it's a fun movie to watch.
Scary was talking my wife through a mail server problem on the telephone, and asking her to ping the mail server. She did a decent imitation of Sean Connery doing a lithuanian accent saying "Give me one ping, Vasily -- one ping only, please?"
Red Storm Rising was a great cold war-era novel. What, about 1000 pages all told? :p I read it back in 1992, which made the likelihood of such thing as Clancy portrayed in the book as reasonably recent history.
